With the recession in full swing the instinct to save is affecting many Spanish families. According to the National Institute of Statistics, 51% are now saving 18% of their income. This trend to save is being mirrored across the euro zone with eurostat reporting that the average amount saved by Europeans is 16% of earnings. Spanish families are also reducing the amount they spend on their monthly shopping bills by opting to buy store branded products instead of big names. The effect of this trend is evident in the Spanish media with many brand name product companies increasing their advertising spend to try and combat the drop in sales.
